International Grain Code
The International Code for the Safe Carriage of Grain in Bulk (International Grain Code), adopted by resolution MSC.23(59), has been mandatory under SOLAS chapter VI since 1 January 1994.
“Grain” covers wheat, maize (corn), oats, rye, barley, rice, pulses, seeds and their processed forms that behave like grain in its natural state.
The code applies to ships of any size carrying grain in bulk to which part C of SOLAS chapter VI applies.
Document of authorization for the carriage of grain in bulk
Applies to all vessels of any size that are intended to carry grain in bulk.
IMSBC Code
SOLAS 1974, as amended, deals with many aspects of maritime safety. Its chapter VI contains the mandatory provisions for the carriage of solid bulk cargoes. The International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code extends these provisions.
Document of compliance for the carriage of solid bulk cargoes
Applies to all vessels of any GRT carrying solid bulk cargoes covered by the IMSBC Code. The IMSBC Code applies to all solid bulk cargoes except grain, which stays under the International Grain Code.
