Before it is issued
The company must hold a valid Document of Compliance (DOC). An audit on board then checks that the safety management system works on the ship.
Validity
- Interim SMC: up to 6 months, for a new ship or a ship new to the company
- Full-term SMC: up to 5 years, with an intermediate verification between the second and third anniversary dates
