It is usually issue on two stages

• Provisional ship station license: in most cases valid for six months
• permanent ship station license: in most cases valid for 4 or 5 years

Provisional ship station license is usually issued firstly to give time to the ship owner to submit required documents for the issuance of permanent ship station license which under most flag states is just an application to be filled by radio technician in some cases
